Feasts of Resistance

Resistance doesn’t only take the form of protests and marches—it’s in the food we share, the stories we tell, the gardens we grow.

Food shapes culture and conflict shapes food—that’s the premise of our new Feasts of Resistance class series as we explore, cook, and eat iconic dishes from around the world—Burma to Ethiopia, Syria to Haiti, and beyond—that were created or affected by social or political unrest.

Food is a common language we all share, and this class is perfect opportunity to learn about and support refugee issues on a local level, all while enjoying a delicious meal in the process. Classes are taught by Chef Alvin Yu, owner of the private dining company Fyusion Dining and a member of PGP’s Board of Directors.

Proceeds from this class series will fund PGP’s summer programming for teen refugee girls in GirlForward, dedicated to creating and enhancing opportunities for girls who have been displaced by conflict and persecution.

The locations featured in the classes were chosen to highlight the stories of GirlForward participants. This summer, PGP will be working with Camp GirlForward campers to share stories from their countries as we garden and cook together. Each week, campers will tend and harvest herbs and vegetables for class (including several vegetables that are hard to find in the US), cook a dish focused on that week’s region, and sit down at the end of class to share what they’ve made.
